I just finished my yearly contribution to The Adult Contemporary Mixtape Club. I used an image that I took on a work trip to Colorado for the cover. Most of the design was actually done on my phone via Afterlight and Instagram. It's a fun restriction to design that way and I might try to do more.

Ronda Reel

I can't stop watching this reel from Argentina-based animation studio Ronda. The visuals are great and I'm mesmerized by the audio track (I wish I knew what it was).

He is: Building

As part of creating The Lynn on Bryant's identity, we worked on a website that is great mix of utility and a visual depiction of the range of what they offer as a restaurant and neighborhood hangout. Due to the large amount of traffic coming from mobile users to restaurant websites, I created it as a responsive site, so that it clearly works on both the desktop browser and a mobile screen and everywhere in between. Grab the corner of the browser and resize for a quick demo.

I started with a framework called Skeleton for the responsive bit and after a few video tutorials, gave it a go. It was very challenging but I feel like it helped me understand what goes into that process better than simply designing it and handing it to a developer.

For ease of posting to the news section, I built that within tumblr. Thinking about running a restaurant from the floor I wanted it easy for them to share the specials of the day, photos of whats going on in the restaurant and whatever else strikes them from wherever they are. I love tumblr as a platform and this was my first attempt at making something custom within their system.

This is an incredibly humbling reel by Instrument.

He is: Listening

Sometimes the best musical discoveries happen in weird ways. Half of my internet consumption revolves around a site called ffffound. One day, a handful of vintage punk rock photos led me to this blog. The author of that blog is in a band called Turf War, which I now have been listening to on repeat for a month. It's a great mix of classic rock and punk, seems like they'd fit into what I remember of the Fargo rock scene.

My favorite song:

The second year of mixes for ACMC is in full effect. I just wrapped up my latest mix. I originally set out to make a full mix of cover songs entitled That Sounds Vaguely Familiar. It didn't work the way that I wanted so some of the cover songs made it to the final but it's a more well-rounded mix. Enjoy.

WU LYF

I've been listening to the WU LYF album Go Tell Fire To The Mountain on heavy repeat for a month now. They were recently on Letterman and I laughed super hard at the end when Dave comes out and tries to talk to them, worth watching all the way through or else just skipping to the end.

Also awesome:
Wu Lyf - We Bros by WU LYF

This does remind me of that time that my parents came to see you in your electro-pop-bizarro-twin band in Fargo. Elk club basement? Awkward.

All is Bright

It's holiday time again! I worked with Design Director Laura Qvale and the rest of the rockin' KNOCK team to create this year's Target holiday in-store experience, including the massive sparkling tree in the downtown atrium. New Media Artist Carl Martin shot this fabulous video of the whole experience. Hope you enjoy it, and may all of your holidays be bright!

The Lynn on Bryant

Over the last few months we have been working with Jay Peterson and Peter Ireland on the branding for their new restaurant. The Lynn on Bryant is a family-friendly bistro in the heart of the Lynnhurst neighborhood of Minneapolis. Jay and Peter both have backgrounds growing up in rural areas, and incorporate those root into everything from their farm to table philosophy to their strong sense of community. It was important to us that their identity exemplified both their past with a rustic, timeless familiarity and their forward thinking with functional simplicity. We are proud to have been a part of such an amazing group of people who helped build the Lynn and hope you stop by and get to know them.

This was the first time that we worked on a project that wasn't for a family member. Although, Jay is technically probably part of the family. Either way, it was really exciting to work on this together.

She is: Designing

I have this polaroid hanging on a mirror in the entryway to my house. This is me. Striking a pose next to a hot rod at a car show with my dad. I'd assume I'm around 4 in the photo. I think I'm pretty hot stuff. Because I'm hanging with my awesome dad. I always felt pretty special when I got to do these things with my him. They were such a huge part of who he is. And in many ways became a huge part of who I am. He taught me about aesthetics, style, craftsmanship and hard work. Even if he didn't know he was. I wouldn't be doing the things I do today if I hadn't learned these lessons from him. My mom, not to be left out, added to the mix a love of art, and sent me on the right path with lots of support and encouragement of her own. The parental combo is greatly appreciated today. I've seen my dad create amazing cars, and real works of art if you ask me. He is modest and sincere about his work. He does it because he loves it, not for accolades. With his new shop, Miracle Rod & Custom, I see a glimmer of excitement in his eye that is infectious. It made me excited to apply what I've learned to pay him back for giving so much to me. So, if you are ever in need of a Hot Rod, he's the man! If it's a good job, it's a MIRACLE.

She is: Playing

Here are a few shots from a fun little spring shoot John Christenson was kind enough to do with my kiddos. And, best of all... I got to fulfill my secret job fantasy and played stylist. Our models were semi-cooperative, and highly sugared up. I'm a little shocked they are at all in focus. I guess that is why John is a pro.

NEW KNOCK WORK

Hard to believe I've been working with Knock for almost 4 years. They have recently posted some new work to their lovely website. I had the pleasure of working with them on the Holiday 2010 and Back To School 2010 campaigns for Target stores. Time certainly flies when you are working with great people on such fun projects.
